‘Equal Trouble’ is the new single from Montreal band Blue Material. Formed by Thom Gillies, the four-piece released their self-titled debut back in 2019, self-releasing to tape as well as to digital formats. The new single ‘Equal Trouble’ carries on the cosy, bedroom-style production that runs through the band’s sound. However, this time there’s an undeniable kraut energy owed to the repeated driving bass note. Fuzzy analogue tones take up space and the drum machine is plucked directly from the 80s. As the track gains funky undertones, Thom sings catchy melodies full of soulful melisma; he occasionally slips into a charming falsetto.
